Structure and Development of Victorian (VELS) Curriculum - Essay Example The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) outline what is important for all Victorian students to learn and develop during their time at school from Prep to Year 10. They provide a set of common state-wide standards which schools use to plan student learning, assess student progress and report to parentsâ⬠(What are the Victorian Essential Learning Standards?, 2009) This paper is briefly analyses the structure and Development of Victorian (VELS) Curriculum The VELS has total six levels classified into two categories; primary school level and secondary school level. Level 1 ââ¬â Preparatory, Level 2 (Years 1 and 2), Level 3 (Years 3 and 4) and Level 4 (Years 5 and 6) are the primary school levels whereas Level 5 (Years 7 and 8) and Level 6 (Years 9 and 10) are secondary school levels as per the VELS system. All the levels except the preparatory level, assumes to be completed in two years as per this curriculum structure. ââ¬Å"The Victorian Framework is designed to assist families and early childhood professional to guide childrenââ¬â¢s learning and development from birth to 8 years of age.à It links the five learning outcomes from the national Early Years Learning Framework (0 ââ¬â 5) withà the learning and teaching in the first stages of the Victorian school curriculum ââ¬â the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) from ages 5 to 8 years. It outlines ways to support childrenââ¬â¢s transitions into and between early childhood education and care and schoolâ⬠(Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework: Birth to 8 years (VEYLDF 0-8)) The curriculum is further divided mainly into three brad areas based on the teaching subjects like Physical, Personal and Social Learning. The aim of such classification of curriculum is to achieve a balance between the education, work and life.
